Description

Secretly located between Curitiba and Florianopolis, this sanctuary is devoted to the conservation of the Brazilian wildlife, flora and fauna. This organization has painstakingly replaced and introduced plants with indigenous species over the last 15 years, and now the sanctuary is home to parrots of all colors, jaguars, pumas, tortoises, spider monkeys, and more!

Many of these valuable animals were rescued from the illegal pet trade or were the victims of abuse. For that reason, the park is closed to the general public and the entrance is not marked. ELI volunteers help with feeding and cleaning enclosures, breeding programs, monitoring behavior, and other responsibilities. Volunteers live on-site in the brand new guest house complete with all western amenities.

The minimum stay is two weeks. Volunteers need to be relatively physically fit, interested in conservation and breeding efforts, and mindful around the enclosures (especially around the big cats). No previous experience or education is required, but a background in biology or some Portuguese is helpful. This is an ideal placement for volunteers who are looking to spend some time in nature and who are not afraid of getting dirty.

Highlights

1. The sanctuary is a 183-acre property devoted to Brazilian fauna and wildlife.

2. The park is closed to the public, so volunteers do not spend time working with day visitors.

3. There is no language requirement for this program, but by living and working with the staff there are plenty of opportunities to learn basic Portuguese.

4. ELI volunteers help with the following activities: feeding the animals, cleaning enclosures, breeding programs, planting, monitoring behavior, assisting the full-time biologist, and visiting researchers and permanent staff as needed.

5. Brazil is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world and offers visitors the chance to see species not found anywhere else on earth!
