Description

In Malawi Primary school learning starts at age 6. Prior to this there is little formal learning and very limited access to early learner education. A head start in education is essential to children's development. On our child-care and development project we support a rural nursery school. The school is understaffed and under-resourced. As a volunteer you will help to provide a fun and productive learning environment for young children, giving them a brighter future.

As well as an introduction to education the children learn some practical skills. As part of the programme we are promoting dental hygiene by helping the children to brush their teeth. After a busy morning you will return to the volunteer cottage for lunch. In the afternoons you will help to provide extra-curricular activities for primary school aged children, including wildlife club, arts and crafts or sports.

Children are at their most vulnerable from 0-5 years old, health problems in this age group have given Malawi a high infant mortality rate. One of the major problems that affect childrens health and development is malnutrition. One of the biggest factors in this is a lack of protein in their diet. We are tackling this problem in our community by funding a feeding programme for the nursery school. You will help to prepare and provide a high protein porridge mixture to address this problem, helping to keep the children happy and healthy.
