Access to affordable health care is a major challenge in Jamaica. The distance to travel to get health care plus the costs associated with some services is unaffordable. Even when some services are free persons are unable to afford the transportation cost. Many poor, vulnerable and at-risk communities struggle to ensure that their members are in good health. In these communities pregnant and lactating mothers, children and the elderly are often prone to many types of diseases. By being able to offer health care to the community significantly helps in health education and preventative. Volunteers in the medical field (doctors, nurses, dentists, physiotherapists and other health practitioners) are suitable for this project. Volunteers who are also studying in the health field can also assist greatly in these community health outreach activities and volunteers will also get the opportunity to work at a hospital or health centre and assist with patient care. As a volunteer on this program participants will be making a major contribution to health care to some of the neediest persons in the population.
