The National Registration Center for Study Abroad offers a combination Spanish study program and volunteering opportunity in the city of Montevideo in Uruguay. Volunteers will spend at least four weeks studying Spanish in group classes and mastering language skills such as listening, grammar, and oral and written comprehension. English will not be used in class. Volunteers can enroll in as many weeks as desired, but must spend about two to four weeks (four to 12 weeks for beginners) to fully benefit from the course. Volunteers will be placed in community volunteering positions for a minimum of four weeks. Opportunities are available in various fields, including Healthcare, Social Services, Teaching, Ranch Stay, and Early Childhood Education.


1. Study Spanish for at least four weeks and then volunteer in a placement of your choice in Uruguay.

2. Attend Spanish lessons with 1-4 other language learners.

3. Volunteer in one of many placements in fields like Language Teaching, Youth Development, and Social Services.

4. Spend at least eight weeks living in Montevideo, capital and largest city of Uruguay.


U.S. citizens traveling on regular passports for tourism or business do not need a visa for a stay of 90 days or less. Those planning a longer visit must obtain a visa in advance.

Minimum age of 18 unless accompanied by an adult. Volunteer positions on a space available basis. These are unpaid positions and there is a limited number of positions every month.
